Argentina: 24,000 physicians rejected the entering of Australian exhausted nuclear fuel into Argentina and asked the Parliament not to approve the nuclear Agreement. 7, 000 of them are members of “FEMECON” (Federation of Phisicians from the Great Buenos Aires) and 17,000 from “FEMEBA” (Federation of physicians from the province of Buenos Aires).

The President of FUNAM, Raúl Montenegro, distributed their official documents and warned that such opposition from 24,000 physicians “is one of the most powerful reactions against the agreement signed by Australia and Argentina”. The documents produced by these two Federations State that the Constitution of Argentina “forbid the entering of Radioactive waste”.

Cordoba and Buenos Aires (Argentina), Adelaide and Sydney (Australia), May 10 2002.- The president of FUNAM, Dr. Raul Montenegro, and the president of the “Association Against the Pollution of Esteban Echeveria”, Dr. Valentin Stiglitz, announced yesterday that “24,000 physicians from the Great Buenos Aires and the Province of Buenos Aires produced two documents that rejects the entering of Australian exhausted nuclear fuel into Argentina”, and asked the Parliament “not to approve the Nuclear Agreement signed last year by Australia and Argentina”. The first declaration was produced by the powerful “Federation of Physicians of the Great Buenos Aires”, FEMECON, that has 7,000 physicians members. Their statement against the import of Australian nuclear waste also asked the parliament “not to approve the Agreement signed by Argentina and Australia”. His President Dr. Jorge Manfredi and his Vice-president Dr. Augusto Fulgenzi signed the document.  The second declaration was produced by one of the greatest federation of physicians of Argentina, the also powerful “Federation of Physicians from the Province of Buenos Aires” (FEMEBA) that has a constituency of 17,000 physicians. His Vicepresident Juan Carlos Pussetto sign the document.  The “Federation of Physicians from the Province of Buenos Aires”, FEMEBA, stated that “We are strongly opposed to the import of radioactive waste from Australia. We reject the Nuclear Agreement because millions of people will be endangered”. The document signed by Dr. Juan Carlos Pussetto also state that: “True independent countries don’t accept the import [of radioactive waste]. We see with horror this new attempt for disposing nuclear waste into the property of the Atomic Energy Agency of Argentina (CNEA) in Ezeiza near the International Airport Ministro Pistarini” and warned about the risks of such location.  “The most important goal of the ‘Federation of Physicians from the Province of Buenos’, among other, it’s to protect the health of the public. For such reason we have a moral commitment: to warn the government about the risks involved in the entering of nuclear waste”. The document produced by FEMEBA is signed by his Vice-president Dr. Juan Carlos Pussetto (FEMEBA, Note # 396, 30th April 2002, 1 page). The president of FUNAM Dr. Raul Montenegro underlined that “such documents are unprecedented in Argentina. For the first time 24,000 physicians protested against the import of foreign nuclear waste. The parliament and the government cannot ignore their strong statements”.
